Department of the Ancient History
B.A. in Ancient History is a 4-year undergraduate course divided into eight semesters, with each semester lasting a period of six months. As an academic discipline, ancient history is the study of mankind’s past, viz., history, society, religions, material culture, and languages of ancient Greece and Rome, besides Indian history. Subjects range from prehistory (c. 1500 BCE) to the early medieval world (c. 1000 CE). A B.A. in Ancient Indian History at Maharana Pratap College is a 4-year course at the UG. level. The program aims at providing an introductory survey of ancient Indian history to the students, familiarizing them with the tools of studying ancient Indian history, and building an understanding of the discipline of history. The program spans over a very long period of India’s ancient past, from pre-historic times to circa 1206 AD, and endeavours to dwell upon major landmarks of ancient Indian history. The program is designed with the objective of educating students as scholars, developing their employability in the government sector, and preparing them for higher education and research. It trains students not only for a career in higher studies but also for various competitive examinations and vocational courses, as, for instance, in the fields of field archaeology and museology. The effective implementation of the program, however, calls for organizational support, both human and physical, and the total devotion and commitment of all the stakeholders.
