National Service Scheme (NSS)
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a voluntary programme under which young students from colleges work towards creating a campus-community linkage. Popularly known as NSS, this program is conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The scheme primarily orients the students toward community service while they are studying in educational institutions, developing their personalities and inner feelings towards community welfare. NSS helps the students grow individually and as a group. Volunteering for various tasks under NSS activities allows students to become confident, develop leadership skills, and learn about different people from different walks of life. Students also learn about various life-essential skills while working towards improving people’s living standards, thereby fulfilling the aim of the NSS of providing help to everyone in need. Active volunteers of NSS gain exposure and experience in becoming accomplished social leaders and efficient administrators.
The Motto of NSS “Not Me But You” is a terse expression. On face it appears to be very simple and short. but behind it lies a lot of meaning. It is very deep and suggestive and is keeping with the spirit of service for others. The expression stands for two things: Forgetting and surrendering the self, and Rendering selfless service to others. The word ‘Not’ before ‘Me’ is to reduce the self to nothing and the Word ‘But’ before ‘You’ can be expanded as follows: – “I do not live for me but for you.” “The world is not only for me but to you also.”
The main objectives of National Service Scheme (NSS) are:
• understand the community in which they work
• understand themselves in relation to their community
• identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving
• develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
• utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems
• develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities
• gain skills in mobilizing community participation
• acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes
• develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
• practice national integration and social harmony
Badge
The NSS Symbol is embossed on the badge. The eight bars in the wheel represent the 24 hours of a day. The red colour indicates that the volunteer is full of young blood that is lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.
